Should parents not let their kids play video games?
marcus asked:
Maybe not take them away completely but listen . . . kids need to run around and get involved with others. When i was a kid all i wanted to do was go out and play in the park with my friends not play online video games against them. I feel like this hurts their health and their social life . . . what happened to little league hide and seek and racing around the complex with bicycles??

Video games will make them happy, and you want them to be happy right? I think you should allow them to play video games.
There is no reason why parents shouldn’t let kids ever play video games. Yes they should not be allowed to play too much video games because they do need exercise and will get fat if they just eat and play video games. Also they should not play games that are inappropriate for their age group because the games could teach kids some bad things that they may not know and shouldn’t know by different ages.
Those games still exist and are played very often, but with the generation of youth right now there are nowhere near enough kids getting out and playing.
All of this applies along with watching TV as well.
You need to allow them some leash with this because any normal boy in todays world hwo doesn’t play video game unfortunately will be made fun of horribly. so yes make him go outside and have fun at least every once in a while but to eliminate gaming completely would just create a grudge.
My kids dont wanna play video games because they are to tired. They have chores to do, homework, FFA, etc. and if they have spare time then they can play video games if they want. But then we live on a farm. They are perfectly normal, responsible, healthy kids, with values.
I know that many parents think that video games are making people fatter, and are bad for kids, but I can tell you that video games are fine, as long as you choose the right ones. For example, games like Wii Fit for the wii, or even Wii Sports are great games that are fun, and can help you get off the couch.
I agree that children need more time outdoors than they get these days. I do not agree that organized sports is the way to get that socialization. This is the compromise my son and I came to, and I think it’s working: He has to do all his chores, all his homework and have good behavior all week in order for him to get to play video games for the time duration of MY choice. More often than not, he’s at the playground if I have the time to keep an eye on him.
And that’s the main issue: our culture has so stigmatized ’strangers’ and deified ‘innocence’ that we feel we have to watch our children 24/7 and if we don’t, we get reported to CPS. So those of us who work full time or who simply have too much to do wind up having to table things like cleaning or cooking dinner so some neighbor with a social conscience doesn’t call the cops on us for ‘neglecting our children’ or ‘abandonment’. That’s what happened to racing around the complex with bikes. It got consumed by paranoia and well-meaning busybodies with nothing better to do than gossip and cause drama.
